5 ways Erb Prioritizes Driver and Freight Safety

In cold-chain transportation, safety is essential to the integrity of temperature-sensitive freight. The products we move feed households, supply major grocery networks, and support foodservice operations, emphasizing the high stakes of every shipment. Since 1959, The Erb Group has built a safety-driven culture grounded in experience, accountability, and genuine care for our team, clients, and the freight we’re entrusted with. Our approach combines advanced technology, strong operating standards, and ongoing training, allowing our team to work with confidence and consistency.  Safety is not the responsibility of a single department. It is a coordinated effort involving many specialized teams across our organization. Maintenance, drivers, dispatch, operations, IT, health and safety, warehouse personnel, and terminal leadership each play an important role in equipment readiness, communication clarity, food-handling procedures, and real-time decision-making when challenges arise on the road. This collective approach ensures safety is built into daily operations and embedded into how we work.  From maintaining our fleet and adhering to strict food-safety requirements to supporting safe driving practices on the road, we are committed to protecting both your freight and the communities we serve. The following five strategies highlight how The Erb Group prioritizes driver and freight safety, delivering reliability, quality, and peace of mind for our clients.

Lytx DriveCam telematics for real-time coaching and insight

Being proactive is the best way to approach road safety. Since 2017, The Erb Group has implemented Lytx in-cab camera technology across our fleet to support continuous improvement in driving behaviour, situational awareness, and accident prevention. These high-definition forward- and driver-facing cameras provide enhanced visibility on the road, including night vision, helping us better understand conditions and patterns that affect safety throughout a delivery.   When any unusual or sudden movement is detected, the cameras capture a short window of footage before and after the event, giving our Driver Services Team a clear and objective understanding of what occurred - not just what happened, but how, when, and why.  This insight helps us identify behavioural trends, learn from real-world scenarios, and provide meaningful coaching that strengthens safe driving habits. Using Lytx as a preventative and educational tool allows us to protect our drivers, safeguard our freight, and contribute to safer roads for everyone we share them with.

Strict food-safety standards for refrigerated and frozen freight

Freight safety begins with stringent temperature control practices to ensure every shipment remains fresh and protected from the moment it leaves the shipper until it reaches its destination.   The Erb Group leverages industry-leading smart reefer technology that maintains, records, and verifies temperature and product integrity throughout a delivery. Our fleet is equipped with OrbComm’s advanced PT6000 system, a remote reefer monitoring and control system which provides precise temperature and fuel management, full regulatory compliance, and shipment visibility.   In collaboration with continuous monitoring through CargoWatch and integrated sensors, we can track every load in real time and confirm that it remains within its defined temperature range. Two-way communication features and cellular connectivity for tracking allow our team to intervene instantly during a trip if needed, adjusting settings from our terminal while the load is in motion. Whether we’re changing a set point, restarting a reefer, initiating a defrost, or responding to fluctuating temperature or fuel alerts, we can act quickly and proactively. This ensures every load stays on track, protected, and properly cared for from start to finish.  At our terminals, real-time dock temperature monitoring provides complete climate visibility, ensuring product integrity is maintained not just on the road but also during handling or resorting. This smart technology supports sustainable operations, keeps costs efficient for our clients, and preserves the freshness and quality of every shipment.  In addition to our equipment, as a food-safety-certified carrier, meeting International Food Safety Act standards, Erb trains every employee in proper food handling, temperature control, and quality assurance to prioritize product safety at every stage of the transportation process.   These layered skills and systems work together to preserve freshness, quality, and consumer safety, delivering consistent confidence to our clients and peace of mind with every load.

Continuous learning and skill development for professional drivers

Ensuring safety is a significant aspect of the trucking industry and within our organization. We are proud to have many programs and initiatives in place to ensure our drivers and freight are kept safe on the road.   Launched in 2008, our ProDrive Program is a core component of our safety culture and enhances our driver training approach. Designed, planned, and brought to life within our organization, the program evaluates key driving behaviours, including speed management, braking, idle time, and other on-road traits that influence safe and responsible driving.   These indicators are measured against both internal benchmarks and industry standards to help drivers continuously improve on road performance. The goal of the program is to reduce risk, build safer habits, and recognize professionalism behind the wheel. Drivers who exceed these standards are recognized annually at our Employee Appreciation and awards event, Erb Excellence Night. This event acknowledges top-performing drivers, owner-operators, and terminals, fostering driver appreciation and a mindset of continuous learning.  This year, the program advanced, with performance data now collected through Isaac in-cab tablets, and the impact has been clear: 50% of our drivers improved their scores from Q1 to Q2. This rising trend demonstrates that our continuous feedback and personalized performance coaching are working and that our drivers are committed to building safe habits on the road.  In addition to the ProDrive program, we also maintain an active development framework that includes monthly tailgate sessions, seasonal safety meetings, and learning modules that keep safety knowledge current and top of mind for drivers.

Real-time in-cab communication with ISAAC

Safety starts with communication. Our ISAAC in-cab technology ensures real-time connectivity between drivers and dispatch through ELDs (Electronic Logging Devices), supporting safer decisions and safeguarding both our people and your freight.  In 2024, The Erb Group implemented ISAAC in-cab communications technology across our fleet. The program has helped to modernize our fleet management process, improving how our team connects with each other and resulting in a more seamless delivery experience.  ISAAC has transformed real-time communication by equipping every driver with a user-friendly touchscreen tablet that provides digital trip details, secure messaging, and electronic signatures.  This system enhances compliance, improves delivery accuracy, and supports seamless coordination from terminal to destination. With ISAAC, drivers benefit from clear routing, instant support, and faster workflows that keep them moving efficiently and safely.   Combined with advanced telematics and reliable connectivity, this technology reinforces our commitment to operational excellence and a driver-first approach.

Regular equipment maintenance for cold-chain safety

Our drivers keep safety top of mind every day, but none of it would be possible without the skill and commitment of our Fleet Maintenance Team. They ensure every truck and trailer is in peak condition so our drivers can deliver with confidence.  Our Fleet Maintenance Team is made up of highly skilled 310T and 310J-licensed mechanics and technicians who thoroughly understand the anatomy and performance requirements of our equipment.   Through scheduled inspections, proactive servicing, and detailed technical diagnostics, they ensure that every tractor and trailer operates at peak reliability. Their expertise not only extends the life of our fleet but also plays a critical role in preventing breakdowns, protecting freight integrity, and keeping our drivers safe on the road.
