When Aaron joined The Erb Group’s Wash Bay as a high school student, he thought it would just be a part-time job. What he didn’t expect was that it would lead him to a skilled trade he loves and a career path that’s taken him from ensuring our trucks are shining when they stride down the road to playing a vital role in keeping our wheels turning. D’un travail étudiant à une carrière professionnelle

Aaron’s story is proof that passion and opportunity make a powerful combination. From a young age, tinkering with things that moved always put a smile on Aaron's face. “I’ve always been curious about how things move,” Aaron said. “Anything with wheels or an engine, I was messing with.” Aaron started at The Erb Group’s wash bay as a student. From there, he enrolled in his high school co-op program, which drew him back to The Erb Group and opened the door to a career he loves.

« J'ai effectué mon premier stage dans une concession automobile, mais cela ne correspondait pas à mes attentes », explique-t-il. « Au deuxième trimestre, je suis arrivé chez Erb et j'ai tout de suite su que c'était là que je voulais être ».

De l’atelier de remorque à l’atelier de camion frigorifique, pendant son stage, il a acquis de l’expérience dans tous les secteurs de nos opérations d’entretien, from the truck shop to the reefer shop, helping him to build a clear vision for his future. “When my co-op ended, I moved straight into a Grade 12 apprenticeship with Erb in 2020. At first, I didn’t get into the truck shop right away, but working on different types of equipment made me a better mechanic in the long run,” Aaron recalled while reflecting on his journey with us.

Un jour dans la vie d’un mécanicien

For Aaron, no two days in the shop are the same. He starts with a morning huddle with our shop managers to discuss priorities and assignments. From there, his work can range from routine preventative maintenance to diagnosing complex mechanical problems. “If things are slow, I’ll walk the yard to look for little things that need any attention,” he explains. “Staying ahead of small issues keeps our fleet in top shape and our drivers safe.”

Travail en équipe et support en atelier

During his apprenticeship, Aaron not only developed his skills but also gained confidence, deepening his understanding that the job requires more than just technical knowledge. It demands persistence, problem-solving, and teamwork. “When something comes up that nobody’s seen before, we all brainstorm together. There’s always someone willing to help if you’re willing to listen and learn.” The Baden shop, Aaron’s home base, stands out for its clean, well-lit space, service pits that make inspections easier, and modern equipment. “It makes a difference working in a place that’s safe, organized, and set up for you to do your best work,” he said. Add in natural sunlight, good music, and a team that truly supports each other, and you’ve got an environment and culture that sets the tone for making cool moves and keeping our fleet running at its best.

Des conseils pour les futurs techniciens

Aaron estime que pour réussir en tant que mécanicien, il ne suffit pas d'avoir des connaissances techniques. Lorsqu'on lui a demandé quel était son meilleur conseil pour les mécaniciens qui débutent chez Erb, il a partagé ces cinq conseils :

• Posez des questions et acquérez des connaissances auprès de techniciens expérimentés. Il est essentiel de faire preuve d'ouverture d'esprit et d'être prêt à écouter et à apprendre.
• Développez votre patience.Lorsqu'une tâche ne se déroule pas comme prévu, faites une pause et reprenez-la avec un « esprit neuf ».
• Acquérez des compétences informatiques de base.Les camions modernes utilisent des logiciels de diagnostic et des tablettes pour les contrôles de sécurité. La maîtrise des fonctions informatiques de base vous aidera à accomplir vos tâches quotidiennes.
• Apprenez à connaître les systèmes.Une fois que vous comprenez le fonctionnement d'un système, il devient beaucoup plus facile de diagnostiquer les problèmes.

Fierté dans son travail

At the end of the day, Aaron says the best part of his job is knowing he’s helping keep trucks — and essential goods — moving. “It feels good to know you’re a part of something bigger,” he said. “Keeping these trucks safe means food gets delivered and drivers stay safe.
