{"id":970,"date":"2019-01-09T15:49:17","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T20:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/erbgroup.com\/?p=970"},"modified":"2023-02-08T10:02:14","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T15:02:14","slug":"new-distracted-driving-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/erbgroup.com\/fr\/new-distracted-driving-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"NEW DISTRACTED DRIVING LAWS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stiffer fines and long term consequences are here for distracted drivers in Ontario.\u00a0Drivers caught talking,\u00a0texting, dialing or emailing on a handheld device will be fined up to $1,000 \u2014 more than double the current fine. Additional penalties include a three-day licence suspension and <strong>three demerit points<\/strong>. On top of that, convicted motorists can expect their insurance rates to go up.<\/p>\n<p>Distracted driving has become a substantial issue in our society, and it is not without consequence. See for yourself\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It takes only\u00a0<strong>3 seconds\u00a0<\/strong>after a driver\u2019s attention has been diverted from the road for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/safety\/driver-safety\/cmv-driving-tips-driver-distraction\">crash<\/a>\u00a0to occur.<\/li>\n<li>Checking a text for 5 seconds means that at 90 km\/h, <strong>you\u2019ve travelled the length of a football field blindfolded.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00c0 propos<strong> 26% of all car crashes<\/strong> involve phone use, including hands-free phone use.<\/li>\n<li>Driver distraction is a <strong>factor in about 4 million<\/strong> motor vehicle crashes in North America each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These statistics paint an unpleasant picture. Texting and driving has become a daily occurrence for many people, and it is something that each individual driver needs to stop.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to feel as though you\u2019re the best driver on the road; to get overly confident in your abilities. You\u2019ve driven so many times you could do it with your eyes closed, right? However good your driving skills are, remember that it only takes one second of distracted driving to make a difference. It only takes one animal to jump in front of your car while you aren\u2019t looking, or just one person swerving into your lane while you\u2019re sending a text.<\/p>\n<p>Road safety is always a priority here at Erb, and we understand that texting and driving is a real issue.
